A 55-year-old man died overnight from Friday to Saturday following an exchange of gunfire with police at his parents’ home in Barbençon, Wallonia.

The man had fired twice inside the family home moments before shooting at the police, according to the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office.

Local police officers, supported by special units, intervened in the residential area of Barbençon during the night. The 55-year-old, living with his parents, had brandished a firearm during a family gathering.

“He fired twice inside the house, and a family member managed to call the police,” the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office explained on Sunday morning.

The man then shot at the police through a glass window. “He saw the officers and fired towards them, prompting a response from two officers,” added the prosecutor. One of the shots fatally wounded the suspect, who died at the scene.

The individual was known to the police, according to the prosecutor. The Committee P has also been informed of the incident. The Committee is an external oversight body covering all officials with policing powers.
