German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced an additional €650 million worth of arms will be sent to Ukraine by the end of December, during an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Monday.

This visit marks Scholz’s first trip to Ukraine since June 2022, a few months after Russia’s invasion.

"Germany will remain the strongest supporter of Ukraine in Europe," the Chancellor declared.

"Ukraine can count on Germany. We say what we will do and we do what we promise." After the United States, Germany is the largest contributor of aid to Ukraine.

According to German government figures, approximately €28 billion in arms and military equipment have been delivered or promised to Kyiv since the Russian invasion began on 24 February 2022.

Scholz noted that Germany’s contribution this year is greater than that of France and the UK combined.

In Kyiv, the German Chancellor will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
