The Flemish Government has extended financial support for public accommodation of Ukrainians until March 2026. A total of approximately €38 million will be allocated.
Since the start of the war, local authorities have been able to receive subsidies to create additional accommodation for temporarily displaced persons. This support was initially set to last until March 2025. However, European ministers decided this summer to extend temporary protection status until 4 March 2026.
In response, the Flemish Government will continue the required funding until the end of March 2026. The funding will support both the accommodation of displaced persons and their transition to regular housing when appropriate.
The intention is for all local authorities to gradually phase out the temporary accommodation they have established by the end of March 2026.
From the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 until the end of October 2024, just over 90,400 persons, the vast majority of them Ukrainians, have been granted temporary protection status in Belgium, according to figures from the Belgian Immigration Office.
