The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government lost a vote of confidence in the Bundestag on Monday afternoon.

The result had been expected, but paves the way for early parliamentary elections in 2025.

Scholz is now set to ask President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve the parliament and call for early elections.

These elections are likely to take place on Sunday, 23 February.
