A 51-year-old man found bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound in the centre of Antwerp on Sunday night may have shot himself.
The incident appears to have been an accident, the Antwerp Public Prosecutor said on Tuesday.
The man was taken to hospital in a serious condition, but has since recovered sufficiently to be questioned.
In his statement, he admitted that he was responsible for his injury. The man has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm.
