Today, the weather will be variable with showers from the North Sea bringing sleet or snow to the Ardennes, according to the Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM). In the south of Belgium, snow has already impacted traffic.

The sky will be partly to mostly cloudy with showers spreading across the country from the North Sea, mainly affecting central regions. The far west may remain dry, and the risk of showers in the northeast appears limited.

In the Ardennes these showers will bring sleet or snow above 500 to 600 metres. Elsewhere, there will generally be rain showers.

Temperatures will range from 1 to 5 degrees south of the Sambre and Meuse valley and 5 to 7 degrees elsewhere.

The northwest wind will often be moderate, with gusts around 50 km/h. Meanwhile at the coast, the northwest wind will remain strong, with gusts reaching 55 to 70 km/h.

Dangerous traffic

Heavy snowfall in the south of the country has caused difficulties for lorries on major routes, warned the federal road police just before 01:00 on Monday.

The snowfall has affected the provinces of Luxembourg and Liège, and the southern part of Namur. The traffic monitoring centre, Perex Centre, reported problems on the E411 and A26/E25 highways.

A lorry was reportedly blocking lanes early morning on the E40 between Liège and Aachen, near Battice, in the direction of Germany.

De-icing operations are in progress. Motorists are advised to maintain safe distances, avoid sudden braking, and reduce their speed.
