The holiday period is a time of calm and relaxation and merriment. But it also is a peak moment for accidents which can quickly turn parties into a nightmare. The fire brigade has shared several safety tips ahead of the Christmas and New Year's celebrations.
Christmas trees are one of the main dangers – whether they are real or fake. Real trees should be watered regularly to prevent them from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. Meanwhile, the fire brigade advises people make sure that fake trees have a non-flammable label. Christmas trees should never be placed close to curtains or heat sources such as fireplaces.
Moreover, it is recommended to check the wiring of the Christmas tree lights for any sign of damage, as well as using LED lighting which emits less heat and uses less energy. Lights should always be turned off when you leave the house or go to sleep.
Keeping the atmosphere cosy can also be made safer. The fire brigade recommends placing tea lights and candles on sturdy candle holders or glass holders on flat surfaces. They should be placed in visible areas and not left near flammable objects. Children and pets should also never be left alone by burning candles.

Around this time of year, many people enjoy a fondue for dinner. These can be made safer by using electric fondue appliances, and ensuring no cables are in the way for people to trip over. Fondue appliances should be placed on non-flammable surfaces, away from flammable materials.
The fire brigade emphasises that fires from fondue pans or deep fryers should never be extinguished with water. Instead, turn off the energy source then use a lid or a fire blanket to extinguish the flames. Do not move the appliance and call 112 to ensure everything is safe.
Finally, smoke detectors are highly recommended to ensure all celebrations are safe and that you start the new year off right.
