A police officer was violently attacked during an inspection on Friday in Liège, the Public Prosecutor's Office reported on Saturday.

Liège police arrested an individual in the city on Friday during an inspection. The man, born in 1995, was smoking a cannabis joint in public when approached by officers and immediately resisted.

Police decided to take the suspect into custody, but when placing him in the patrol vehicle, he violently struggled and kicked the police car.

At the police station, the detainee continued to resist and hurled numerous insults at the officers.

During the incident, one of the officers was injured. They will remain unfit for work for a period of 21 days.

The suspect was taken into custody and referred to the Liège Public Prosecutor's Office on Saturday. An investigating judge has been assigned to the case and an arrest warrant is being requested against the assailant.
