Parental leave continued to gain popularity in 2024, reaching a record number of allowances.

On Monday, the latest data from the National Employment Office (ONEM), covering up to and including November, revealed this increase.

In the first 11 months of the year, an average of 102,110 people use parental leave each month.

This marks a significant rise from the monthly average for the entirety of 2023, which was 93,876 people – already a record.

Men are increasingly taking advantage of this policy.

From September to November, there was a 10% increase in men taking parental leave, compared to a 3.6% increase among women. However, in absolute numbers, women remain the primary beneficiaries.

Between September and November, approximately 62,840 women and 38,283 men took parental leave each month.
