Eight young people were arrested in Anderlecht on Monday evening for launching fireworks at the police, local police confirmed on Tuesday.
Local police intervened at around 23:00 at Place du Conseil. Witnesses had reported that a group of youths was attempting to set fire to the Christmas tree in the square.
When police officers arrived at the scene, the group launched fireworks at them. Eight individuals were eventually arrested, including minors.
Due to previous incidents during New Year's Eve in the Cureghem neighbourhood, Anderlecht Mayor Fabrice Cumps (PS) has issued a police ordinance this year. Under 16s from the area are prohibited from being outside without an adult after 19:00 on New Year's Eve.
