The Belgian Union of Film Critics (UCC) has awarded its 2025 Grand Prix award to the film “The Zone of Interest” by British director Jonathan Glazer.
The Grand Prix does not necessarily crown the best film of the past year but aims to draw public attention to a work whose artistic qualities enrich cinematic expression, the UCC says.
Regarding the winner, the Union emphasised “the excellence of the film’s sound design, which establishes a virtuosic dialogue with its visual dimension.”
The UCC noted that “its direction creatively realises Hannah Arendt’s concept of the banality of evil and demonstrates the implicit power of cinema.”
The selection process for the 2025 Grand Prix involved five rounds and “passionate debates.”
Other films that particularly caught the critics’ attention were, in order of ranking, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” Ilker Catak’s “The Teachers’ Lounge,” Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Poor Things,” and Rose Glass’s “Love Lies Bleeding”.
