Italian authorities have opened an investigation into the allegations of physical and sexual aggression towards a group of six Belgian youths on New Year's Eve in Milan, Italian news agency Ansa reported on Monday.
The incident occurred in Piazza del Duomo, the main square in the northern Italian city, according to the Milan's Public Prosecutor's Office.
The six Belgians in their twenties - four girls and two boys - had descended on the square to celebrate New Year's Eve, but the night out ended on a sour note.
The group of friends said they were at one point surrounded by dozens of men, who groped them both on and under their clothes for about 10 minutes. They plan to complain to the Liege police soon.
Interim Belgian Foreign Minister Bernard Quintin (MR) has already indicated that his services are following the case closely.
