The Francophone Belgian green party Ecolo have called for X, formerly known as Twitter, to be temporarily blocked until the social media site complies with EU regulations.

Co-leader Marie Lecocq of Ecolo stated: "We need to protect our citizens from the risk of foreign interference and ensure national security."

X has been mired in controversy, especially since billionaire Elon Musk took over. He is accused of using the platform to further his political interests, including aiding Donald Trump’s re-election and supporting populist and far-right movements in Europe.

"We see an alarming trend," Lecocq added. "X has become a tool for a multi-billionaire with authoritarian political ambitions, who openly supports divisive conservative forces, such as the AfD in Germany and climate sceptics in Canada. This platform endangers social cohesion and democratic stability. Our institutions cannot remain passive in the face of such a threat."

According to the greens, X has evolved into a hub for massive disinformation and a playground for foreign regimes. They are calling for the suspension of the network until it fully complies with European regulations on content moderation, combating disinformation, and transparency, as outlined in the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Lecocq concluded: "Being wealthy and American does not mean one can place themselves above European rules."
