English stand up comedy with a permission to fail

Permission to Fail is a brand new comedy competition, with a twist. Comedian and MC Niamh Moroney, who is one fifth of the Insecure & Dangereux team, brings to life a brand new comedy show, on January 17th at 21h, in Le Chapot, a cosy little bar just off the Grand Place.

Having run several different types of shows since the creation of Insecure & Dangereux in 2018, Niamh craved something that turned the need for success in the comedy scene on its head. Niamh tells us, “I want to create a night that is truly dedicated to testing new material. In the Brussels English language comedy scene we have very few open mics, and many showcases. It’s hard to find a balance between trying new material, and being ready to show jokes on a showcase.”

Seven comedians will perform eight minutes of new material each. At the end of the night the audience will vote to decide who was the worst performer of the night. The participants will all get participation medals, bless them. The “Failure of the Month” will be adorned with a trophy, and secure a place in the final competition, which will take place at Le Chapot in June, where each month’s “winner” will come back and compete to be the “Best of the Worst”.

“I started this show in September as a collaboration at a venue in Schaerbeek, a collaboration that was supposed to last at least 6 months. Unfortunately, even though we sold out the first gig, the venue refused to host the second show, and dumped the show on the spot. We didn’t even get the monetary contribution they had offered us, which hurt a lot. It was disappointing to be invited to produce a show at a venue, only to discover that the patrons are more interested in beer sales than supporting art."

"So I called into Le Chapot, upon recommendation from my friend Bram De Ridder, who was the man behind the amazing Camping 58. Bram assured me that the fine folks at Le Chapot cared about artists, and to move the second edition of the show there. Within a week Permission to Fail was produced at Le Chapot, and I was invited back to run a series of events. I thought, let’s take this opportunity and turn the show into a competition on the topic of failure, since the show itself has already failed, and risen from the ashes.” says Niamh, sharing the short but tumultuous history of the show.

Permission to Fail will happen the 3rd Friday of the month, from January to June, at 21h. There will be trophies, medals, spot prizes, and hopefully ridiculous tie breakers! Come and join the judging panel (the audience) but make sure to reserve your spot as there are only 40 places per show.

This show is Pay What You Can, cash donations of 10 euro are recommended.

The tickets can be booked at eventbrite and on facebook.
