The Chamber unanimously approved a bill on Thursday that extends the 'right to be forgotten' in the insurance sector.

This law now removes the requirement to disclose past cancer diagnoses and includes travel cancellation insurance under its protection.

The right to be forgotten has existed since 2019 for those taking out outstanding balance insurance.

Previously, people with chronic illnesses or those who had recovered from cancer found it extremely difficult to obtain such insurance or had to pay very high premiums.

Insurers are no longer allowed to consider successfully treated medical conditions when assessing risk. Depending on the illness, this right can be applied one, five, or ten years after treatment.

Former patients still had to disclose past cancer diagnoses in their insurance applications. This new bill, proposed by Anneleen Van Bossuyt (N-VA), eliminates that requirement.
