Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo broke even in Belgium in 2024, a year ahead of schedule, with its shops generating sales totalling €397 million, the company reported on Thursday.

The first Jumbo store was opened in Belgium in 2019 and by the end of 2024, the number had increased to 37.

‘The growth experienced by Jumbo in Belgium is mainly due to its own shops and the growing number of independent entrepreneurs who are enthusiastically adopting the formula," the chain said in a press release.

Jumbo's Belgian shops recorded autonomous growth of around 7%, compared with average market growth in Belgium of around 1%, it added.

The chain as a whole, the Jumbo Food Group, achieved a turnover of €10.72 billion in 2024. This was a 2.7% drop, which the group attributes to a ban on tobacco sales in Dutch supermarkets from July 2024.
