A Hungarian man miraculously survived after clinging to a high-speed train in Germany for nearly 30 kilometres on Thursday, even though the train was travelling at more than 280 km/hr, German police revealed on Friday.
The 40-year-old man boarded the train in Munich heading towards Lübeck without a ticket. While the train was stationary at Ingolstadt station, about 70 kms north of Munich, he stepped onto the platform for a cigarette. As the train doors closed and the train began to move, he leaped into the space between two carriages and grabbed onto some cables.
The train then reached a top speed of 282 km/hr, police reported.
The driver eventually halted the train in Kinding, 30 kms. north of Ingolstadt, where the man was apprehended. During questioning, he explained that he had clung to the outside of the train because his luggage was still inside. He survived the harrowing ordeal without any injuries.
The man now faces charges for fare evasion and disturbing public order.
