Flemish Fisheries Minister Hilde Crevits (CD&V) renewed her call for fishing quotas based on current scientific data during her visit to Ostend on Monday with the new European Commissioner Costa Kadis.
Having recently joined the new Commissioner to oversee the fisheries and oceans file, Kadis began his tour at the daily fish auction and then visited the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), where he was briefed on various research instruments.
During the visit, minister Crevits emphasised the importance of using up-to-date information on fish stocks to set fish quotas.
She pointed out that quotas are often currently based on outdated data, leading to significant fluctuations that make planning difficult for Flemish fishers.
"It is no coincidence that we visited a vessel with equipment to collect current data on fish stocks," said Crevits. "We now often base things on data that is two years old and that system really needs to be overhauled."

In addition, the minister urged for greater consideration of observations made by people in the trade as well as a reduction in administrative burdens. She aims to combat European overregulation and called for better spatial planning that includes consideration for the fishing industry.
Commissioner Kadis said he was receptive to these points during his visit. He expressed appreciation for scientific studies and their importance in fishing.
"I will carry forward the information I have received here during my mandate," he said, adding that he wanted to visit more points of interest throughout Europe.
"During those visits I will get direct feedback and I can listen to the concerns and suggestions in the fisheries sector. That feedback will be important in shaping our policy."
