The US Senate has unanimously approved the appointment of Marco Rubio as the new Secretary of State, the New York Times reports.
The 53-year-old Florida senator, who succeeds Antony Blinken, is the first member of the Trump administration to be officially appointed. He received 99 votes in favour, with no votes against and no abstentions.
Rubio is the first person of Latin-American origin to hold this position.
Issues he will now need to address include the war in Ukraine, the agreement between Israel and Hamas, and competition with China.
