The number of new car registrations in the European Union (EU) increased by 0.8% last year.
The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) announced on Tuesday that approximately 10.6 million new registrations were recorded.
Spain continued its progress with a 7.1% rise, while Belgium (-6%), Luxembourg (-5%), and Germany (-1%) saw declines in new car registrations in 2024, according to ACEA.
In 2024, petrol cars remained the market leaders with a 33.3% share. Hybrids followed with 30.9%, and electric vehicles accounted for 13.6%.
Petrol car registrations dropped by 1.8% last December. All major markets experienced declines, except Spain, which saw a 16% increase. The market share fell to 29.6% from 31.6% in December 2023.
Hybrid car registrations surged by 33.1% in the EU in December 2024, capturing a market share of 33.6%, up from 26.5% in the previous December.
Electric car registrations decreased by 10.2% last month, reaching 144,367 units. The overall market share for electric vehicles was 15.9% during this period.
Diesel car registrations dropped by double digits across most EU markets in 2024. In December, registrations fell by 15%, resulting in a market share of 9.8%.
