Only 48% of Belgian employees consider their workplace to be emotionally and psychologically pleasant.

Belgium is significantly below the European average of 53%, and well behind leaders Norway (65%), Denmark (64%), and the Netherlands (62%).

The figures are according to a large European study on the work climate reported by Vlerick Business School on Wednesday. The survey was conducted in 19 countries, with an average of 1,500 respondents in each country.

In Belgium, only 44% of workers feel that their managers show genuine interest in their suggestions and ideas. Belgian companies scored particularly low on key aspects contributing to a sense of fairness.

"Only 33% of Belgian workers feel they receive a fair share of company profits. Moreover, just 37% believe that promotions are awarded to the most deserving," Vlerick Business School said. The institution highlighted that this can increase worker frustration, impact productivity, retention, and overall corporate culture.

A lack of trust in leadership also plays a role. "Psychological safety and honesty are fundamental elements in thriving workplaces. Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands have the most psychologically safe work environments in Europe. In Belgium, less than half of the workers feel good emotionally and psychologically, with a score of 48%, below the European average of 53%."

The study shows a direct link between work flexibility (including the ability to work remotely) and trust. "In Belgium, where hybrid work is offered to only 40% of workers, there is substantial room for improvement," Vlerick Business School noted.

On a positive note, a higher proportion of Belgian workers compared to their European counterparts feel their company values inclusivity and diversity (17% versus a European average of 14%).
