Two people, including a child, were killed in a stabbing attack in a park in the German town of Aschaffenburg, near Frankfurt, German police said on Wednesday. A suspect has been arrested.
While the circumstances of the attack are not yet clear, police have already succeeded in apprehending the suspect. A large security perimeter has been established around the scene of the crime in the Schöntal park. Aschaffenburg is located in the state of Bavaria, just under 40 kilometres southeast of the Frankfurt am Main Airport.
The attack, the motive for which is not known at this stage, occurred "at around 11:45 in the Schöntal park, causing the death of two people," the police said on their X account. It concerns a 41-year-old man and a 2-year-old boy. The suspect they arrested was a 28-year-old Afghan.
Initially, two people were arrested, but one of them was later removed from the list of suspects.
One suspect is believed to have tried to escape across the railway line, bringing rail traffic at Aschaffenbourg to a halt. According to the railway company, trains to and from Aschaffenburg are currently at a standstill.
The Schöntal park is close to the town centre. The police always patrol on foot, according to a spokesperson. This may be one of the reasons why the suspects were quickly arrested.
