Archaeological excavations at Materplein in Oudenaarde have led to significant discoveries that shed new light on the village’s history.
Mater, the largest sub-municipality of Oudenaarde, has a long history.
Under the guidance of the intermunicipal association SOLVA, evidence of habitation dating back over a thousand years has been uncovered.
The oldest finds date from the 10th century and include remnants of wooden houses and pottery indicating an extensive trade network.
Foundations of an older church, dating from the period 1160-1220, were also revealed beneath the current church. Additionally, various graves typical of the 10th to 12th centuries have been discovered.
The excavations provide insights into a period for which few written records exist.
Interested parties can view the excavations and findings themselves during the Open Trenches Day on Sunday, 9 February.
Guided tours will be organised from 10:00-12:00 and from 13:00 to 14:00.
