Five people were injured in a shooting at a school in Örebro, 200 km west of Stockholm, on Tuesday, according to Swedish police.
"Four people were shot; their condition is not clear. The operation is ongoing," the police had reported on their website, later confirming a fifth person was also injured.
A while later, the man suspected of being the shooter was confirmed by police to be among the five people injured.
Local media reported a significant police presence in the area. "The danger is not over. The public must continue to avoid Västhaga," the police stated at 14:10 local time.
Local media showed armed police officers surrounding a building in the neighbourhood.
According to the daily newspaper Aftonbladet, automatic gunfire was heard, and the city’s hospital emergency department has been reorganised to accommodate the injured.
"The reports of violence in Örebro are very serious. The police are on the scene, and the operation is in full swing. The government is in close contact with the police and is closely monitoring the situation," Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer told public broadcaster SVT. An investigation is underway for "attempted murder, arson, and serious weapons offences."
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson responded to the attack in a post on social media, saying that his thoughts with all affected by the attack. He callied it "a very painful day for all of Sweden."
