A World War I artillery shell was detonated on Wednesday afternoon at Sint-André Beach in Koksijde, West Flanders.
The shell was discovered during demining operations conducted at Nieuwpoort Beach by the Maritime Services and Coast Agency, police spokesperson Hélène Ingels confirmed.
The artillery shell, weighing 800 kilogrammes, was found earlier on Wednesday.
According to police, it was a highly unusual find.
The bomb disposal unit DOVO was called to the scene, and the shell was safely detonated further along the coast at Sint-André Beach.
