Maastricht/Aachen Airport will accommodate flights originally scheduled in Belgium on Thursday due to a strike that will disrupt Belgian air traffic.

Wizz Air will operate nine passenger flights from the Dutch airport, as it often uses Maastricht as a backup for its Charleroi flights in Belgium. Maastricht Airport also expects at least two additional cargo flights from Ethiopian Cargo.

Normally, no regular flights were planned at Maastricht on Thursday. “It’s a challenge,” admitted a spokesperson, but the airport has successfully mobilised the necessary staff at short notice.

Other airlines have also requested to use foreign airports for flights initially planned in Belgium. TUI fly will divert some flights to Amsterdam and Eindhoven airports in the Netherlands, and Düsseldorf in Germany. Other flights will be postponed.

Brussels Airlines, the largest carrier at Zaventem, has moved a charter flight that was scheduled for Finland to Lille.

Belgian air traffic will be severely disrupted on Thursday due to an air traffic controllers’ strike during the national demonstration in Brussels.

No flights will be able to land or take off from Belgian airports between 6:45 a.m. and 10:15 p.m.
