Two people have been killed in a mid-air collision between two small planes near an airport in Marana, a town in the southwestern US state of Arizona, according to police and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The NTSB reported on X that the collision involved a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II. Both planes had two occupants each.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

Marana Airport is an ‘uncontrolled airport,’ meaning there is no control tower and pilots are responsible for maintaining safe distances themselves.

In recent days and weeks, there have been several serious plane crashes in the United States. The most severe incident occurred in Washington D.C., when a helicopter collided with a passenger plane, resulting in 67 fatalities.
