The police conducted a large-scale operation throughout Belgium targeting distracted driving on 12 and 13 February.

Federal highway police and officers from 101 police zones caught 3,118 motorists using their phones, the federal police reported in a statement.

In total, 3,578 fines and on-the-spot fines were issued for distracted driving. Other distractions noted by the police included applying makeup and reading a book.

Over 1,000 motorists also had their driving licences revoked. The federal police explained that this high number is due to an increasing number of prosecutors recommending immediate license suspension for mobile phone use while driving.
