The number of public charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) in Belgium increased by nearly half last year to over 22,000. However, these are unevenly distributed.

Belgium now has 22,037 public charging stations for electric cars, according to the Belgian Mobility Dashboard (BMD), an initiative by the car federation Febiac and the Federation of Belgian Enterprises (VBO), the country’s largest employers’ organisation.

Of this total, 17,335 are located in Flanders. This puts Flanders significantly ahead of Wallonia, which has 2,799, and Brussels, which has 1,903. A total of 1,886 of the charging points in Belgium are fast-charging stations.

Pieter Timmermans, the head of VBO, stated that the transition to greener vehicles is now "irreversible". He noted, however, that there is still a significant gap between the different regions of the country and a lack of resources to accelerate the transition. "Wallonia, for instance, clearly faces a challenge in terms of charging infrastructure."

The dashboard also revealed that there were 4.7% fewer new vehicle registrations in Belgium last year. While registrations of diesel vehicles and plug-in hybrids declined sharply, there was a significant increase in battery-electric vehicles, up by 37%.

"This trend indicates a clear shift towards electric solutions, largely driven by businesses." 86% of the new battery-electric vehicles were company cars. This can be explained by the fact that, from 2026, only new electric company cars will be tax-deductible.
