The partner of a 39-year-old woman found dead in her apartment in Opwijk has been detained by the investigating judge, the Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor announced on Saturday.

The woman was discovered on Friday in her apartment on the Steenweg op Dendermonde in Opwijk. Forensic experts and a medical examiner determined at the scene that the woman was “most likely” killed violently, according to the prosecutor.

The prosecutor subsequently requested an investigating judge to probe the case as a murder. The apartment was examined on Friday evening, but the medical examiner could not yet establish an exact cause of death. An autopsy and further toxicological analysis have been ordered.

The victim’s 38-year-old partner, who turned himself in on Friday, has been arrested. He has since been brought before the investigating judge and remanded in custody.

The investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the victim’s death is ongoing, the prosecutor added.
