The Élysée Palace denied on Wednesday that a new trip by French President Emmanuel Macron to Washington was being considered “at this stage”
The French president’s office thus refuted earlier statements by a government spokesperson, who had informed the press following the cabinet meeting that a new visit by Macron was “being considered.”
Macron was reportedly to travel to Washington with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer “in the near future” for a possible meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Last week, Macron, Starmer and Zelensky each visited Trump separately at the White House. The meeting with the Ukrainian president escalated into a public dispute, causing Zelenskyy to leave the White House prematurely without signing a highly discussed resource agreement with the US.
Following Trump’s announcement to pause all military aid to Ukraine, Zelenskyy on Tuesday expressed his willingness to restore relations with the US.
He said Ukraine was ready to work towards peace with Russia “under the strong leadership of President Trump.”
