Ground staff at 11 German airports, including the major hubs of Frankfurt and Munich, have been called to join a public sector strike on Monday as part of a wage dispute, announced the German union Verdi on Friday.
The airports affected are Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, and Leipzig-Halle.
Major disruptions are expected at these airports on Monday. "There will be massive restrictions on departures and arrivals, potentially leading to flight cancellations," Verdi said in a statement.
A series of strikes have been organised in recent weeks across Germany as unions try to pressure the Federal Government and local authorities during the third round of talks on a collective wage agreement for about 2.5 million public sector workers.
Verdi is demanding an 8% pay rise, a minimum increase of €350 per month, higher allowances for demanding jobs, and three additional days of leave.
On Thursday, around 20,000 healthcare workers went on strike, followed by childcare workers on Friday.
Many Fraport employees, who operate Frankfurt airport, are covered by these collective agreements and will go on strike on Monday.
