Strikes have begun at 13 major airports in Germany. This mobilisation has caused major disruption, with thousands of flights being cancelled, including between Belgium and Germany.
Ground staff and security personnel at 13 German airports, including the major hubs of Frankfurt and Munich, have been called to join a 24-hour public sector strike on Monday as part of a wage dispute.
The other airports affected are Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, and Leipzig-Halle. At two smaller airports, Weeze Airport near Duisburg and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, only security personnel are on strike.
According to the airport association ADV, more than 3,400 flights will be cancelled throughout the day, affecting 510,000 travellers. As previously announced, Brussels Airlines cancelled several flights between Brussels and German airports.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport is entirely closed due to the strike. Frankfurt, Germany's largest airport, has warned of severe disruptions, including for transit passengers. A spokesperson for air traffic control stated that no passenger planes will depart from Frankfurt on Monday, with limited capacity for incoming flights.
A series of strikes have been organised in recent weeks across Germany as unions try to pressure the Federal Government and local authorities on a collective wage agreement for about 2.5 million public sector workers.
