A human head was discovered on Wednesday afternoon in the Sambre River near Rue Francisco Ferrer, in the municipality of Farciennes (Hainaut province), the Charleroi Public Prosecutor's Office announced in a press release. The Federal Police's Victim Identification Service has been notified.

A boatman travelling on the Sambre River made the discovery at around 15:00 on Wednesday and immediately alerted the police. The Charleroi Public Prosecutor's Office announced mid-afternoon that the identity of the victim was still unknown.

"A rescue diver was sent to the scene and recovered the human remains, without finding any other body parts near the site of the discovery," the judicial authority stated. According to local newspaper La Nouvelle Gazette, a human torso and a leg were also spotted not far from the site of the discovery of the head.

A forensic examination is scheduled for the end of the day.
