A fire broke out around 4:00 in the morning in an outdoor area of the prison in Dendermonde, East Flanders during the night from Saturday to Sunday.
No fewer than 22 inmates were evacuated to another outdoor area. Police, firefighters, and medical services responded to the scene.
The fire was brought under control, allowing the inmates to return to their cells after a medical check.
The public prosecutor has appointed a fire expert, the city of Dendermonde confirmed on Sunday morning.
