A severe barn fire on Friday in Alveringem, West Flanders,  has resulted in the death of 150 animals, according to Westhoek Fire Service Zone.

Firefighters received a call at 2:50 p.m. about the blaze on Lostraat, in Alveringem’s Gijverinkhove area. Flames were already through the roof, and a large plume of smoke was visible from afar.

The fire was brought under control at about 6 p.m., but extinguishing efforts will continue through the night, the first responders said. Residents have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

About 60 of the some 200 cows that were housed in the barn were evacuated and transferred to a meadow. A vet administered pain medication to the injured animals.

The farmer reported that 150 animals, including 50 calves, did not survive.

The barn’s roof contained asbestos, which was spread by the smoke and wind. A hazardous materials advisor examined the released soot particles, and analyses indicated a potential asbestos presence up to 700 metres downwind.

Residents have been advised to leave any soot within this area untouched and report it via the 0494/419230 number.

Outside this area, soot can be disposed of in rubbish bins. However, gloves need to be worn at all times during cleaning operations, and hands need to be washed thoroughly afterwards.

Smoke forced several people to leave their homes on nearby Weegschede Street. Six residents were accommodated in Alveringem’s community centre. They may not yet return home but are allowed to visit them to feed or retrieve their pets, after registering with the police on Lostraat.
