Belgium in Brief: May Day May Day!

Firstly Happy May Day, or Happy International Workers' Day if you'd rather.

For those of you not working, enjoy the sunshine. It's supposed to last into the weekend, but then next week will be cooler. And for those of you working – not to worry, the sun will be gone soon, and the beaches will be packed anyway, so enjoy the empty offices and workspaces while you can.

Amongst our articles today is one that highlights that Belgium needs your help when it comes to tackling the growing number of food poisoning cases. Last year the Federal Agency for the safety of the Food Chain recorded an increase in the number of food poisoning outbreaks of nearly 8% compared to the previous year. 17% of these cases occurred in private homes.

The AFSCA is therefore asking for increased vigilance when it comes to food hygiene to mitigate food poisoning risks: wash hands regularly during meal preparation, use clean and separate utensils for raw and cooked foods, defrost food in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature, thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables, and avoid leaving food at room temperature for more than two hours. They say this is especially important when it comes to family or friends gatherings. So, if you are packing that picnic for a trip in the sunshine today – just make sure those chicken drumsticks are completely defrosted and haven't been sitting in the sun all morning. We don't want you to become another Belgian statistic.
