A train with approximately 250 passengers aboard has been stationary for over half an hour in the municipality of Essen in Antwerp, the Grens police district confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

"The train driver made an error in judgement and applied the brakes," said local police's Patrick De Smedt. "He thought someone was walking on the tracks, but that turned out not to be the case."

Shortly after 16:00, the train had already been stationary for half an hour. However, it is now almost ready to depart.

The firefighters are providing water to passengers during the wait due to the heat.
