In 2024, prosecutors dismissed 60.5% cases, marking the lowest proportion since tracking began in 2006, excluding the Covid-19 years of 2020 and 2021, according to figures from the Justice Ministry analysed by De Tijd on Friday.
This declining trend is not new. Since 2006, when 75% of cases were closed without further action, the proportion has decreased consistently until 2022.
The reduction is attributed to improved case admission policies, according to the Public Prosecutor. Agreements with the police ensure that, under certain conditions and restrictions, fewer reports are forwarded to Prosecutors.
Consequently, fewer cases are opened at Prosecutors' Offices and are promptly concluded without criminal proceedings.
