The Flemish presenter and actor Tom Waes will appear in the Antwerp police court on Monday following his involvement in a drink-driving accident in Antwerp's Kennedy Tunnel last year.
Waes faces charges of drink-driving, causing unintentional injuries, colliding with a foreseeable obstacle, and not wearing a seatbelt.
Overnight on Friday 29 November 2024, Waes crashed into an impact absorber near roadworks. He was seriously injured in the accident, with his life at risk at one point. A worker, who was in a signalling truck, sustained minor injuries.
Post-accident findings revealed that Waes was not wearing a seatbelt and had a blood alcohol concentration of 2.44 per mille, equivalent to 14 units of alcohol, according to the prosecution.
Waes is now recovering and has acknowledged his excessive alcohol consumption, issuing a public apology.
For the four offences he faces on Monday, VRT's popular host could be fined up to €16,000 and banned from driving for five years. He might also be required to install an alcohol interlock device in his vehicle.
