Germany's domestic intelligence agency announced on Friday that it has officially classified the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a verified far-right organisation.

The agency, named the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), stated there is now concrete evidence that the anti-immigration party, founded in 2013, is threatening Germany's democratic order.

"The dominant concept of a population based on ethnicity and ancestry is incompatible with a free democratic order," the agency asserted.

The federal agency added that the statements and positions of the AfD party and its key representatives deny the constitutional principle of the inviolability of human dignity.

Previously, the AfD, which secured second place in last year's general elections, was regarded as "suspected" of extremism by the agency. The party unsuccessfully challenged this designation in court.
