The 'Buddy Deal' has been launched once again by The Foundation Against Cancer in Belgium and the Netherlands this May to encourage individuals to quit smoking or vaping nicotine with the help of a loved one following April's Pano Report.
The fourth year of the initiative is supported by Belgian 'North Sea Texas' actor and ex-smoker Mathias Vergels throughout the month of May.
The latest Pano Report confirms that young people are increasingly becoming addicted to nicotine due to the popularity of e-cigarettes. It calls on policymakers to "take additional measures to better protect them."
The report states that smoking frequently leads to a greater chance of feelings of anxiety and depression. One month of quitting can increase the chances of quitting in the long-term by five times.
E-cigarettes have also not been medically recognised as devices to quit smoking, and more often attract young non-smokers due to attractive colours and flavour selections.
The ban on disposable vapes and display has recently been implemented. Now, the organisation has suggested that the next focus be the restriction of digital promotion and illegal trade.
What's the deal, buddy?
Individuals can sign up for free online at buddydeal.be as a "quitter" who commits to giving up cigarettes for the month and a friend signs up as a "buddy" who motivates, supports and encourages the quitter throughout the period. The "buddy" further provides support through distractions, such as planning other fun activities, finding healthy alternatives, and celebrating the successes.
Events to help people stop smoking, such as healthy cooking lessons and mental health sessions, are also held in various Belgian cities.
The organisation encourages participants to join the 'Buddy Deal' Facebook group to connect with those going through the process alongside them.
The Foundation Against Cancer advises heavy smokers to ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice when participating in the challenge to ensure health-conscious quitting that does not lead to taking up other unhealthy habits or negatively impacting their mental health. The challenge also encourages people to stop smoking together and play both the role of "buddy" and "quitter.
After the month of May, The Foundation Against Cancer will continue to send quitters tips and assistance via email and the Facebook group. The foundation offers a helpline at 0800 111 00 for further assistance.
