Despite initiating the war against Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin believes in possible reconciliation with the neighbouring country.
He stated in excerpts from a Russian state television documentary, marking the 25th anniversary of his first presidency, that “it seems inevitable despite the current tragedy” and added, “it’s a matter of time.”
Putin expressed confidence in winning the war, claiming that Moscow possesses the military means to bring the conflict to its “logical conclusion with the desired result for Russia.”
He noted that the use of nuclear weapons has not been necessary and said he hopes it will remain unnecessary in the future.
The Kremlin demands that Ukraine abandon its ambitions to join NATO and also claims vast areas of the neighbouring state.
Before the war, Putin had already questioned Ukraine’s statehood, referring to Ukrainians as part of the Russian people.
During Putin’s ordered invasion, tens of thousands of Ukrainians, including many civilians, have lost their lives due to the bombing of residential areas.
