Students who began the HBO5 Nursing programme in September 2023 are voicing concerns about ongoing uncertainties surrounding their diploma and future opportunities.

Almost two years into their studies, they remain uncertain about their programme’s status following its transformation into the Basic Nursing programme, according to the Belgian Federation of HBO Nurses on Sunday.

In 2023, the HBO5 Nursing programme was restructured to become the Basic Nursing programme. This change was prompted by a federal law amendment that divided the nursing profession into "basic nurse" and "nurse responsible for general care (VVAZ)."

After the academic year commenced, some students received an email confirming the approval of the Basic Nursing programme legislation, but it emphasised that the specifics had not yet been finalised.

To date, this clarity is still lacking, says the sector federation. Students report they continue with identical lessons, internships, and assessments as in the traditional HBO5 Nursing programme, while documents circulate referencing Basic Nursing. Class groups are mixed, with students under different statuses but receiving the same education.

The students are seeking confirmation that their programme will be recognised as a full-fledged HBO5 Nursing course, as promised during enrolment. They also want assurance that their diploma will be recognised in the job market as HBO5 – VVAZ and request information on the reform’s practical impacts on their diploma, internships, and career prospects.
