A mother and her son have died in floods while on holiday in southern Jordan, local authorities reported on Monday.
The mother and her three children were reported missing on Sunday due to floods in the Shoubak region, about 200 kilometres south of the capital, Amman. On Monday, the bodies of the mother and one son were found. Both held Belgian nationality.
According to the governor of Ma’an district, the woman was on an adventure trip without a guide, along with her children. They were part of a larger group, most of whom have been evacuated by authorities.
The woman’s other two children were initially missing but have been located in good health by rescue teams. Belgium’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the incident on Monday.
"We are aware of this case and regret the loss of our fellow citizens. We are closely monitoring the situation with our embassy in Amman. Due to the individual nature of these cases, we cannot provide further information," they stated. Petra news agency reported that an investigation is underway into the exact circumstances of the deaths.
On Sunday, the historic city of Petra, a popular tourist destination in Jordan, was evacuated due to sudden flooding in the area, with approximately 1,800 tourists swiftly moved to safety.
