Rue du Trône in Ixelles has been closed to traffic since Sunday evening due to a hole that has appeared in the road, Brussels Mobility said on Monday, confirming an initial report by Bruzz media service.
The police were notified at 8:36 p.m. on Sunday about the hole, located near No. 4 Rue du Trône, which measures about 3.0 metres by 1.5 metres with a depth of 10 centimetres.
Emergency services quickly secured the area. “No gas-related risks have been detected, and there is no danger to local residents,” Gaëlle Zguimi, spokesperson for the Mayor of Ixelles, said.
Although initial reports suggested that a water leak had caused the road subsidence, Vivaqua - the Brussels water distribution company - disproved this on Monday afternoon.
“We confirmed that it was neither a sewerage issue nor a distribution network problem," Vivaqua spokesperson Saar Vanderplaetsen clarified.
The cause of the road collapse remains to be determined. In the meantime, Trône Street remains temporarily closed in both directions.
