Five suffer from smoke inhalation on Brussels train

Five passengers  were mildly intoxicated by smoke on the Brussels Metro and taken to hospital following a minor electrical fire beneath a carriage between Clemenceau and Delacroix stations in Anderlecht,  Brussels firefighters said on Monday.

The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 p.m., resulting in a significant amount of smoke spreading through the tunnel, and immediately halting services on Metro lines 2 and 6. Passengers from the affected train were evacuated, primarily through Delacroix station.

Brussels firefighters and staff of transport company Stib responded quickly. The firefighters extinguished the fire using powder extinguishers, while three Stib technicians received on-site assistance from emergency services.

Metro traffic was halted on Lines 2 and 6 between Porte de Hal and Simonis stations, the Stib reported. This interruption was expected to last for some time, as the train remained on-site and checks were needed to determine whether the infrastructure had sustained any damage.
