Two lanes have been closed on the E40 motorway near Bertem towards Brussels since 8 a.m. on Tuesday after chunks of concrete fell from a bridge under repair.
The Flemish road network manager had already closed one lane due to ongoing work, but police shut an additional lane on Tuesday morning.
"Work is being carried out on the bridge over the E40, where the Tervuren roadway passes," explained the road network manager. "Asbestos removal is underway. The bridge’s concrete slab started to crumble this morning, causing pieces to fall onto the road."
Motorists are warned about disruptions. "All traffic from Limburg on the E314 and from Liège on the E40 must pass through this area to reach Brussels, creating a bottleneck," said Peter Bruyninckx from the Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer (AWV). "Delays are around half an hour on both routes."
AWV teams are on site. "The issue will be resolved as soon as possible, but problems could certainly persist until noon," the manager concluded.
