PFAS contamination originating from two firefighter training sites at Brussels Airport has spread to Melsbroek, a district of Steenokkerzeel, according to a municipal announcement on Wednesday.
Three years ago, contamination was identified around the fire station at Zaventem Airport. Brussels Airport reported that, like many fire zones in Flanders, PFAS-containing firefighting foam was previously used for training exercises on the airport grounds, at a time when its harmful effects were unknown.
Research into the airport’s contamination has now concluded, revealing that the pollution has further spread, affecting almost the entire soil in Melsbroek, with PFAS also found in groundwater. Informed letters are being sent to affected residents outlining their situation.
On Monday, 12 May, Steenokkerzeel and the Brussels Airport Company will host an information event at the parish hall in Melsbroek. Concerned residents are invited to attend between 16:00 and 21:00 to ask questions and express their concerns.
