Newly elected Pope Leo XIV has pledged a zero-tolerance stance on sexual abuse within the Church, according to Luc Terlinden, the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels.

Terlinden made this statement at a press conference on Friday in response to a question about retired priest Rik Devillé, who had earlier mentioned concerns from SNAP, an American organisation representing victims of Church abuse. SNAP is alarmed by the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, alleging that Prevost covered up abuse cases in the past.

Terlinden assured that the new Pope will continue the policies of his predecessors. "He will support Belgium’s efforts to prevent sexual abuse and monitor offenders," said Terlinden. "The topic was a priority in his selection of new bishops."

Moreover, the new Pope is expected to encourage greater involvement of women in the Church.

"Leo XIV shared his experiences from Peru, where women hold significant responsibilities within the Church," added Terlinden. He also noted that Leo XIV aims to unite people and communities, advocating for a Church that serves the populace and not solely the clergy.

Terlinden emphasised that Robert Prevost is well-acquainted with the global and Belgian Catholic Church landscape. Belgium hosts large Augustinian communities in Heverlee, Ghent, and Namur, with Leo XIV himself being an Augustinian.

"He understands our secular society in Belgium very well," Terlinden stated. He is pleased with the appointment, describing Prevost as a trained theologian, a man of dialogue, and a true bridge-builder.
